Flash Gordon #1

This publisher has a plan to relaunch the classic franchise—and it's off to a good start.
When I first saw the advertisements for the new Flash Gordon comic, I couldn't believe it. Flash has been one of my favorite heroes for many years. I was disappointed by the Sci-fi Channel's pathetic attempt at a Flash Gordon television show, and I was worried about the new comic. I shouldn't have worried. Flash Gordon is in good hands with Brendan Deneen and Paul Green.
The Good:
Paul Green's artwork reminds me of J. Scott Campbell. All of the characters are unique and fun. Brendan Deneen's story gave all of the characters a unique moment.
Flash and Dale's backgrounds set them up perfectly for the action to come.
The Okay:
The bad guys are one dimensional and a little predictable. I suspect that once we get to Mongo, the enemies will be a match for our heroes.
The Bad:
- The coloring is very dark. The cover was perfect; I wish the inside were as good.
- The Ardden Web site is terrible. It has flipping, flashing things all over the place. There's hardly any real content. No previews and no bios are available. Flash Gordon is all about characters and places. Ardden's Web site needs to be a central repository for all of that information.
Overall
A year ago, my brother and I sat down to reimagine Flash Gordon. To my surprise, many of the themes that we thought would make the franchise viable again can be found in Ardden Entertainment's Flash Gordon. I'm looking forward to more of this series.
